Kevin Abercrombie, Laboratory Director, Metrology Division (AIR-22.214.171.124.1) Naval Air Warfare Center, Aircraft Division
In 1998, the Navy adopted ANSI/NCSL-Z540-1 (1994) as the quality standard for all Navy and Marine Corps calibration laboratories. With the adoption of 17025 as the standard in place of Z540, the Navy is at a cross roads where it must decide whether to adopt the new standard or continue using the existing standard. This paper examines the history of the Navy calibration program and the various quality standards, as well as the pros and cons of adopting 17025. This paper reflects the views and opinions of the author and does not represent the official viewpoint of the U.S. Government, U.S. Navy, or the Naval Air System Command.
