Meeting Overview:
Meeting will start with a tour of the Optical Heritage Museum. The museum has thousands of items within their collections and displays including microscopes, Lensometers, multifocal and antique spectacles. They highlight incredible moments in history and without these scientific discoveries our lives would be very different. The importance of optics within society is so intrinsically linked to our everyday lives that we seldom think of its importance because it is so common place. However, every day our lives are improved by the inventions, many of which were created by American Optical, ZEISS or SOLA. These include anti-reflective coating on our mobile phones, clock faces, ipad, computer and television screens. Other inventions in the medical field include powerful microscopes for diagnosis and research, world safety standards and specialized glass used in car windshields to name but one example, to the first blood pumping machine…optics has helped save millions lives and continues to do so today.

Additionally, fiber optics were also invented in Southbridge! The meeting goal is to focus on the principles optics, light and fiber optics. Calibration of instruments used in this field is a potential growth industry.

The meeting should be of interest to anyone with responsibilities in metrology, quality assurance, or manufacturing.

Topic: Fiber Optic Principles

Speaker:
Tony Irujo, OFS Optics Sales and Technical Support Engineer

Abstract:

  • Basic overview of fiberoptic link components.
  • Application examples.
  • Principles and advantages of optical fiber light transmission.
  • Review of fiber types and selection guidelines.
  • Important fiber performance parameters.
  • Overview of optical fiber industry standards.

Topic: Colorimetry fundamentals and color quality of lighting
Speaker:
Dr. Yoshi Ohno, NIST Fellow, Sensor Science Division

Abstract:
The fundamentals of colorimetry are first introduced, explaining how colors are specified and measured – for emitted light and for object color, what instruments are used and what challenges are for accurate measurements of color. Next, the specification of white light chromaticity for light sources for lighting is introduced, and recent research on preference of white points outside the current standard is discussed. Then, the concept of color rendering is introduced, and recent research on preference of enhanced color contrast, which is penalized by the current standard, is discussed. With new standards, much preferred color quality of lighting may be realized in the future.
