World Standards Day 2017: Standards make cities smarter
Each year on 14 October, the members of the IEC, ISO and ITU celebrate World Standards Day, which is a means of paying tribute to the collaborative efforts of the thousands of experts worldwide who develop the voluntary technical agreements that are published as international standards.

Sufficient fresh water; universal access to cleaner energy; the ability to travel efficiently from one point to another; a sense of safety and security: these are the kinds of promises modern cities must fulfil if they are to stay competitive and provide a decent quality of life to their citizens. Building a Smart City is highly complex. Every city faces its own challenges and requires its own mix of solutions. However, there is one common denominator that greatly simplifies this task.

International Standards support the development of tailor-made solutions that can be adapted to the particular circumstances of a given city. They contain expert knowledge and best practices, and are essential enablers in ensuring quality and performance of products and services. In addition, they drive compatibility between technologies and help users to compare and choose the best solution available. Standards also open the door to a larger choice of products and services. They help increase competition and foster innovation. In a systems approach they enable the integration of structures or solutions from different suppliers. International Standards make things work safely and smoothly together at every level in cities. They provide the foundation for electricity access and all the many devices and systems that use electricity and contain electronics. They support the information and communication technologies that enable data collection, exchange and analysis, and information security. Last but not least they provide important guidance for all aspects of city life, including energy-efficient buildings, intelligent transportation, improved waste management, building sustainable communities and much, much more. With Standards, we can make our cities smarter, step by step. Individual islands of smartness can grow together and interconnect. It is comforting to know that International Standards will support smooth and integrated Smart City development.

METROARCHAEO 2017 , Leece, Italy
The word metrology has a long tradition, deriving from the Greek word for measure. The knowledge about anything is complete only when it can be expressed in numbers and something is known about it. Measurements play a fundamental role in every field of investigation and present day scientific and technological progress has resulted from progress in the field of measurements. Metrology, the science of measurements, includes all aspects both theoretical and practical with reference to measurements, whatever their uncertainty, and in whatever fields of science or technology they occur. Consequently the field of valorisation, characterisation and preservation of Cultural Heritage too is deeply related to the metrological issues for the collection, interpretation and validation of data collected with the different analytical, physical-chemical, mechanical techniques, digital technologies, new ICT tools, etc…

METROARCHAEO2017 wants to gather together Heritage scientists in universities, research institutions, museums, galleries, libraries, archives, small and medium enterprises. The conference program is conceived to foster exchanges of ideas and information, make connections and collaborations, update innovation on “measurements” suitable for Cultural Heritage among material scientists, chemists, physicists, engineers, archaeologists, conservators, restorers, etc..

Special Interest Group Meeting: Micro/Nano Manufacturing, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland
Micro- and nano-scale manufacturing has been the subject of research and industrial focus over the past 20 years. Traditional lithography-based technology forms the basis of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) manufacturing, but also precision manufacturing technologies have been developed to cover micro-scale dimensions and accuracies.

These fundamentally different technologies are currently combined in order to exploit strengths of both platforms. One example is the use of lithography-based technologies to establish nanostructures that are subsequently transferred to 3D geometries via injection moulding. Manufacturing processes at the micro-scale are the key-enabling technologies to bridge the gap between the nano- and the macro-worlds to increase the accuracy of micro/nano-precision production technologies, and to integrate different dimensional scales in mass-manufacturing processes.

Accordingly, the Special Interest Group Workshop on Micro/Nano Manufacturing will focus on novel methodological developments in micro- and nano-scale manufacturing, i.e., on novel process chains including process optimization, quality assurance approaches and metrology. Download Event Flyer

World Conference On Quality And Improvement, Seattle, Washington
The act of innovating is defined as “the introduction of new things or methods.” Innovation itself is neither a new concept nor a new practice, but the demand for innovation in the workplace has shifted dramatically. Out-of-the-box thinking, paradigm shifts, and challenging the status quo are all efforts that organizations have embraced for decades to gain advantage. However, today’s exponential pace of change has shifted innovation from a practice that brings advantage to a practice that is required just to keep up. This mandate exists both for organizations as a whole and for the individuals that work within them. At a professional level, the innovation of one’s self can only be fully realized through the embracing of change, the acceptance of its inevitability, and the acknowledgement that a faster future is already here. The future IS now, and both organizations and individuals have a choice to either lead the change it is bringing or be led by the change that occurs. It is within these disruptive conditions that ASQ invites you to Seattle for the 72nd hosting of the World Conference on Quality and Improvement and the next step in becoming a more innovative YOU!
