Differential Pressure Calibration: Unique Ways to Address a Challenging Calibration
Differential pressure sensors and transmitters are used extensively in biotech and pharmaceutical applications. These calibrations can be very difficult. Regular calibrations of these differential pressure sensors is necessary to ensure regulatory compliance and proper environmental control. In this presentation, we will demonstrate a variety of ways to set up the calibration and perform the calibration of a DP gauge and transmitter.
Metrology’s Role in the Battle Against COVID-19
Precision control of environment (Temperature, Humidity, Pressure) to control and eradicate the propagation and spread of the Corona Virus (COVID-19) in enclosed spaces, e.g., hospital, nursing homes, schools, business establishments, etc.
Topics to be discussed will include:
- What do we know about the impact of environmental controls in virus growth and spread?
- A brief synopsis on the science of evaporation aerosolization of the human breathe and the necessity and effectiveness of masks.
- Some ideas, concepts, and on-going research projects for improve environmental element detection, characterization, control and monitoring.
Pipette Calibration and Repair
Pipettes are used to transfer an accurate amount of liquid from one location to another in many industries such as Bio/ Pharma, Life Sciences and Quality or regulatory testing labs. Pipettes must be maintained, and in accordance with ISO 8655, must past both an accuracy and precision specification in order to be usable in these environments. This course will provide theory behind proper calibration and maintenance of some of the leading pipettes that are common in industry, collegiate and research spaces. In addition, the class will also develop uncertainty budgets around certain volumes of liquid according to ANSI/ NCSL Z540.2. Since technique is critical to passing or failing a pipette, the second half of the presentation will be spent measuring pipette values gravimetrically, repairing pipettes, and looking at how technique can affect calibration results. Attendees will walk away with an in-depth knowledge of pipette calibration, ergonomics, pipette calibration software options and the proper equipment for calibrating pipettes and other volumetric apparatus.
Pressure considerations when calibrating gas mass flow instruments using laminar flow and sonic elements
When developing a system to calibrate common mass flow instruments, like rotameters, mass flow controllers, mass flow meters, etc.., one can select a reference/standard from among several technologies. Two commonly used technologies to cover from nominal ranges from 1 sccm to 5000 slm are based on laminar flow elements and sonic nozzles. Like most calibration solutions it is important to know the ranges and uncertainties, (and in this case, gas species) of the instruments being calibrated to ensure we select reference standards that meet the required measurement specifications. However due to the nuances of how each technology measures flow, it is also very important to consider pressure conditions under which the device will be calibrated.
