William A. Wildhack Award

William A. Wildhack Award

The Wildhack Award is presented annually to recognize outstanding contributions to the field of metrology and measurement science, consistent with the goals of NCSL International.

The award was established in 1970 in honor and recognition of William Wildhack, a long-time employee of the U.S. National Bureau of Standards, now the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Mr. Wildhack was not only very instrumental in the founding of the NCSL, but also, through his wisdom, his leadership, his dedication and foresight, he helped shape the organization during its early formative years.

The award carries an honorarium and includes a bronze and silver medallion bearing the likeness of Mr. Wildhack. This year's recipient is the 34th individual to be so honored.

THE WILDHACK 2004 CITATION Steven Stahley

Tony Anderson has been a long time member delegate of the National Conference of Standards Laboratories International (NCSLI). He served four years as Membership Chairperson and in 1987 & 1988 was Director of Regions 3 & 4. In 1989 he was appointed Vice President, Operations & Marketing, and elected the following year to continue in that role. In 1993, he became Vice President of Conference Management, and in 1995 he was elected Executive Vice President, becoming President in 1996. In 1997 he was re-elected to the Board as Vice President of Standards Policy and continues to be active on several committees in the organization. For the last four years he has been active in representing NCSLI in the National Cooperation for Laboratory Accreditation (NACLA) and currently is the NACLA member delegate for NCSLI, Treasurer, and a member of the NACLA Board of Directors. In 1997 the International Cooperation for Laboratory Accreditation (ILAC) invited NCSLI to become a member of its Laboratory Committee.

Tony has been the NCSLI representative to this committee since then, and obtained for NCSLI the position of stakeholder membership in ILAC. In 2002, at the Berlin General Assembly of ILAC, he was elected Chairman of the Laboratory Committee and to support this new role, NCSLI appointed Tony to the position of Director to ILAC/NACLA and a permanent member of the Board. Tony took a long route to where he is, from his mother country. He completed a 5-year student apprenticeship in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering with the British Ministry of Aviation before graduating from the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) College in Farnborough , England . He worked several years as a Development Engineer for a CCTV company and joined Solartron (Schlumberger) in 1970 as a Sales Engineer.

Tony held various positions within that company and traveled extensively in Europe and North America . He moved to Guildline Instruments Inc., New York , in 1979. In 1982 Tony was appointed Vice President of Planning and Technology and relocated to Smiths Falls, Canada . In 1994, he became President and CEO, and the sole owner of Guildline Instruments. Their headquarters moved to Orlando , Florida . Tony continues as the President and CEO, and owner of the US Company, Guildline Instruments Inc.

Tony presently resides in Florida with his wife Pauline. He has two grown sons, Stuart and Ian. For over twenty years, Tony spent much of his spare time coaching soccer. He is a U.S. National Licensed Coach, and was a member of the Founders' Club, World Cup '94, which organized bringing the World Cup Soccer Championships to the United States in 1994 and to Orlando , which was one of the nine host U.S. cities. Although now retired from active soccer participation, he still follows his favorite team back in England via satellite. His other pastimes include golf, model railroading, and woodworking.

Tony was born in Sheffield in the county of Yorkshire in the north of England and has always been proud of being a "Yorkshire man." Since he was a child, like his father and grandfather before him, he has supported Sheffield United, the local football team. Football, of course, in England , being played with a round ball and known in the states as "soccer." The nickname of this team is "The Blades" as Sheffield has always been known as a steel town and is still famous for its knives. Tony had two excellent teams who were both, of course, at one time called "The Blades." Guess where that name came from? The older team actually was State Champs in their under-18 year. Tony also took both teams to Europe to play against teams over there. They of course spent time in England and even played against the "Junior Blades" in Sheffield and beat them!!!

After the soccer Tony had more time for his other hobbies. Since his first train set as a child, Tony has always been interested in model railways. Since then he has built several layouts and is currently in the process of building two. Since soccer he has also been able to devote more time to one of his other passions, golf. He belongs to a club and tries to play every week when he is at home. His great desire is one day to be able to play on the Pebble Beach course in Monterey .
