Abstract:

The cadmium measurement in environmental samples like sediments requires sensitive and accurate analytical methods. The cadmium at low content in sediments enters the food chain affecting first the living organisms and finally, it is accumulated in the human being. The development of an ion chromatographic separation method of cadmium in sediment for its analysis using isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS) is presented. IDMS is considered to be a primary method of measurement allowing high accuracy analysis. Sediment samples were digested by a rigorous microwave assisted HF/HNO3/H2O2/HClO4 digestion. The digested solution was evaporated to reduce matrix effects. A strong base type I anion resin (Dowex 1-X8) was employed to separate the cadmium. Measurement was performed by exact matching double isotope dilution mass spectrometry using ICP-SFMS in low-resolution mode. The separation of cadmium from many interfering elements, generally allowed measurements by ID-ICP-MS using the isotopic ratios 111Cd/110Cd, 111Cd/112Cd, 111Cd/113Cd, 111Cd/114Cd; where 111Cd was the reference isotope used. However the high level of tin required a correction of the problematic isobaric interferences on the isotopes 112Cd and 114Cd. The results of the method described above were used to quantify cadmium in a certified reference material of marine sediment used in an international comparison for national metrology institutes. Results from this comparison were used to evaluate the developed method.
