Abstract: The paper will present general and specifics aspects of the relationship between the National Metrology Institute of Mexico, CENAM, and one of the industrial sectors with whom it has stronger contact, the automotive and aeronautical.

The relationships are classified according to the different types of mechanisms that promote mutual development of capabilities. This types of relationship are discussed in their theoretical background and illustrated with specific examples.

An important aspect discussed is the role of an NMI, that could be a follower of the industrial needs, or a forefront player, anticipating those needs and proposing solutions in advance.

Finally, some aspects of the future relationship of CENAM, industry and the government are discussed, mentioning scenarios about some of the impacts the different types of relationship will have in the country.
