Abstract: The national and international standards that describe performance tests for Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) are quite mature. Not only do these standards provide the means to compare different CMMs, they embody a quantitative method to test the CMM at the time of purchase and – later – for interim testing. The tests that are included in these standards evaluate very specific measurands, typically 1-D distances, or "lengths." The errors that are revealed by the tests are related to the uncertainty associated with these measurands. However, the measurands that are evaluated in the inspection of workpieces are much more complex, and are often specified using geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T). This paper and presentation will provide an overview of the estimation of Task-specific measurement uncertainty for CMMs, and how this activity relates to CMM performance testing, documentary standards, and accreditation.
