Abstract:

This paper is a step-by-step guide on performing some of the most common reversal techniques in dimensional metrology, including square, straightedge, ball, and cylinder calibrations. Reversal methods are one type of error separation or self-calibration technique that allow for the possibility of extremely high accuracy measurements. Though many of these methods are not necessarily new, there is very little published on how to perform these types of calibrations. Reversal methods have a long history of use in national labs, but many industrial and commercial labs are looking to lower their uncertainty, and reversal methods provide great benefits for relatively little cost.
