Abstract: This presentation will provide an overview of RP-16, Verification of Laboratory Environments, which was just published at the end of 2007. Then a practical example demonstrating the implementation of RP-16 on a newly constructed laboratory will be given.

Prior to the year 2000 the facilities committee had produced RP-7, Laboratory Design and RP-14, Selecting Standards – Laboratory Environments. These RP’s provide the metrology community useful information for their intended purpose. One critical topic missing in these RP’s is test practices to verify the laboratory environments achieve specification. Testing should be performed to verify the laboratory environment after it is constructed and that the laboratory environment maintains specification on a life long basis.

The Facilities Committee’s intention was to provide recommended practices for testing design parameters that could be implemented for all disciplines of metrology. Eight design parameters are included in RP-16: Temperature, Humidity, Static Air Pressure, Particulate, Sound Intensity Levels, ESD Flooring, Electromagnetic and Magnetic Shielding and Site Vibration Measurements. Each design parameter is addressed in a similar format. Therefore the overview of RP-16 will be structured so that it applies to all parameters.

Since this session is dimensional metrology, the example for the practical application of RP-16 will be based on the temperature parameter. Temperature is one of the most widely discussed topics in dimensional metrology. It is also on of the most significant sources of error in uncertainty calculations for dimensional measurements. The temperature example will follow the overviewed format as it was applied for owner acceptance to design requirements on a newly constructed laboratory.
