Globalization has lead to companies across the world collaborating in manufacturing production. Increasingly, industrial measurements are seeking traceability, which often involves harmonizing measurement traceability issues from multiple (and often international) sources.
Reaching agreement between customers and suppliers on what constitutes sufficient evidence for traceable measurements involves addressing numerous issues. Consequently, the ASME B89.7 committee on dimensional measurement uncertainty has recently published guidelines for the “Metrological Traceability of Dimensional Measurements to the SI Unit of Length.” This document provides one possible operational definition for satisfying measurement traceability and discusses many of the issues that need to be resolved between the parties.
This presentation will review the B89.7.5 document and discuss the challenges associated with traceability of industrial dimensional measurements.
