Abstract:
|
To meet the requirements of our modern, technologically-enabled societies, National Measurement Institutes (NMIs) must understand the needs of their customers, particularly those in business and industry. Measuring the bottom line impact of metrology for industry is not easy, but we must address this measurement need to ensure our relevance to our customers. There is no panacea, but this paper will describe some of the studies that have been undertaken in the UK to evaluate the impact of measurement science over the last few years, from economic studies to specific customer research. NMIs must use a range of feedback techniques to understand market requirements and mitigate the risk of nugatory, or poorly perceived research leading to customer dissatisfaction.
