Title: Strategic Planning for Electrical Metrology
Topic Group: International Strategies
E-mail: william.anderson@nist.gov

Abstract: Effective strategic planning is essential for the National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) as they try to balance what are often diminishing resources against the ever more demanding requirements on their measurement science research in order to achieve better accuracies at, for example, higher frequencies over ever smaller dimensions. The challenge is exacerbated by little sharing of planning information among the NMIs around the world. With that in mind the CIPM's Consultative Committee on Electricity and Magnetism formed a Working Group on Strategic Planning (WGSP). In addition to a survey of the NMIs on what they consider the important metrology requirements in electricity and magnetism, the WGSP has developed a preliminary report on the major "big" problems facing the NMIs in the next 5 to 10 years. Besides guiding the planning of the individual NMIs, the efforts of the WGSP will likely foster collaborations on these "big" problems.
