American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
These e-Learning courses are free and provided as a public service by American National Standards Institute (ANSI)

Short Course: Through History with Standards
Throughout its nearly 90-year history, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has maintained as its primary goal the enhancement of global competitiveness of U.S. business and the American quality of life by promoting and facilitating voluntary consensus standards and conformity assessment systems and promoting their integrity. But standards existed long before ANSI was formed. Let's take a quick look across several centuries to see how standards - and their impact on commerce and society - have evolved.

An Introduction to Standards: Why, where and how are they developed?
This course will provide a brief overview of standards, defining types as well as key definitions and terms. The course will then describe ANSI’s role in the standardization process. Lastly, the process by which ANSI participates in the international standardization arena will be covered, along with an overview of regional and international organizations.

U.S. Standards System – Today and Tomorrow

This course is the next step in learning about standards and standards development; it builds on the introductory course, Why Standards Matter. You will receive an overview of the U.S. standards development environment, including the American National Standards (ANS) process. The course will inform you about the value of participating in standards development and reviews the key questions to ask before development is initiated. It also offers examples of the various types of standards and explains how standards development relates to national and international business. Each lesson includes a set of self-assessment questions leading up to a final exam at the end of the course. The entire program should take approximately one and one half hours to complete.

Short Course: Legal Issues in Standard-Setting

This course will outline how U.S. antitrust laws may apply to the standards development process. You will be provided with a brief background on the laws and some basic guidelines on what can be done, and what should be avoided, at standards meetings. You will also receive information regarding the policies that guide a standard-setting committee when it wants to include patented technology or material as part of the standard.

U.S. Delegates to International Activities: Roles and Responsibilities
This course will provide an overview of the standards landscape and explains ANSI’s role in U.S. and international standardization. The course includes benefits of standards to U.S. organizations as well as the U.S. overall., the duties and responsibilities of U.S. delegates and tools and tips for being more effective at international meetings.

NPTEL: A Project funded by MHRD, Government of India
Mechanical Measurements and Metrology: Video Lecture Series
NPTEL is an acronym for National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning which is an initiative by seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) for creating course contents in engineering and science. NPTEL as a project originated from many deliberations between IITs, Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) during the years 1999-2003. A proposal was jointly put forward by five IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur and Madras) and IISc for creating contents for 100 courses as web based supplements and 100 complete video courses, for forty hours of duration per course. Web supplements were expected to cover materials that could be delivered in approximately forty hours. Five engineering branches (Civil, Computer Science, Electrical, Electronics and Communication and Mechanical) and core science programmes that all engineering students are required to take in their undergraduate engineering programme in India were chosen initially. Contents for the NPTEL courses were based on the model curriculum suggested by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the syllabi of major affiliating Universities in India.
International Organization of Legal Metrology(OIML) E-Learning Programme on Legal Metrology
The e-Learning program is available online via the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) website, and provides a significant tool to the ACP countries to enhance knowledge on Metrology as an essential element of Quality Infrastructure (QI). It is envisioned that this tool will contribute to Ql’s overarching objectives of facilitating trade, protecting consumers and promoting fair competition for transformative growth and as an important driver for economic development, industrialization and poverty reduction. The participants of the E-Learning programme will receive a Certificate of Attendance for each module successfully completed and a Certificate for Completion upon successful completion of the Final Test. The project resulted in the development of an online e-Learning programme which consists of two standalone courses. Each course can be taken in any sequence. For both courses there is no prior training required however for the course 2 it is recommended the completion of the first course; the final test will cover the topics of both courses.
