RP 1: Calibration Intervals

This Recommended Practice (RP) is intended to provide a guide for the establishment and adjustment of calibration intervals for equipment subject to periodic calibration. It provides information needed to design, implement and manage calibration interval determination, adjustment and evaluation programs. Both management and technical information are presented in this RP. Several methods of calibration interval analysis and adjustment are presented. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are described and guidelines are given to assist in selecting the best method for a requiring organization.

RP 3: Calibration Procedures

This Recommended Practice provides an overview of key workforce development concepts from both human resources (HR) and laboratory top management perspectives.  It illustrates methods for practical application for the metrology laboratory and for the larger organization of which the laboratory might be a part.  The objective of this publication is to bridge the gap between traditional human resource organizational requirements and the requirements of metrology laboratories complying with ISO/IEC 17025 General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories.  This document also integrates practical approaches to complying with ISO/IEC 17025 requirements to ensure that a laboratory has adequate managerial and technical personnel that are both trained and competent and that the metrology laboratory’s training plans consider current and anticipated workload as well as changes in workforce mix.

 
This document provides technical guidelines for Calibration Procedures (CP) as far as contents needed and format preferred for Measuring and Test Equipment (M&TE), general Measurement/Test Systems (M/TS), and Measurement Standards (MS). This RP is directed to the M&TE and MS manufacturer since their work typically is the reference for all that follows. The general test information philosophy and practice of this RP is applicable to any performance verification test action and documentation for product or other test function activities. This RP is intended to provide enough information to achieve basic standardization in the measurement community through simplification of the M&TE or MS user analysis process and reduction of the duplication of effort in writing, re-writing, and revising CP's by multiple organizations.

RP 6: Calibration Control Systems for the Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Industry

This document is intended to provide general requirements that can be used by the biomedical and pharmaceutical industry for establishing an effective calibration control system. It can be used to develop internal metrology and calibration programs for the biomedical and pharmaceutical industry.

RP 7: Laboratory Design

The intent of this document is to provide a useful guide for the site selection and design of a new metrology laboratory or for the modification of an existing facility. It contains materials and information as an industry aid and guide for specifying design requirements to architects, drafters and builders by the user.  It references numerous international publications on laboratory design.

RP 8: An Individual Equipment Evaluation Guide

The purpose of this document is to provide an objective rating system to use in the evaluation of General Purpose Measurement and Test Equipment (GPM&TE). The procedure is designed so evaluations performed on different equipment by various groups within an organization or company may be compared for selection purposes.

RP 9: Lab Capability Documentation Guidelines

This Recommended Practice is intended to establish a uniform method for identifying and publishing a document indicating the capability of a calibration laboratory, thereby improving the communication of calibration capabilities within the metrology community. Information is for the benefit of the activity searching for calibration services, the laboratory providing calibration support, and any other person or organization interested in communicating on measurement technology/disciplines.

RP 10: Operation of Electric Utility Metrology Lab

This Recommended Practice is intended for use by an organization providing services to US nuclear utilities by calibrating and verifying a particular utility’s measurement and test equipment (M&TE) and related materials, and/or in the administration of the utility’s M&TE program.

RP 12: Measurement Uncertainty Analysis

This recommended practice is for implementing the methods of the GUM and applying uncertainty analysis methodologies established since the GUM’s publication. In addition to methods for estimating uncertainty, the RP includes detailed uncertainty analysis procedures, the evaluation and application of uncertainty estimates and real-world uncertainty analysis examples.

The new RP-12 edition was developed by the NCSLI 173.5 Uncertainty Analysis Committee to provide a recommended practice for estimating and reporting measurement uncertainty that clearly explains key concepts and methods and that builds a comprehensive framework for developing relevant, informative and useful uncertainty estimates.

RP 13: Computer Systems in Metrology

This document presents an outline of the software program elements and guidelines that may be used to improve the quality, reliability and usability of Metrology Computer Systems. The guidelines presented are applicable to all commercially acquired and in-house developed computer systems and automated equipment used for the capture, processing, manipulation, recording, reporting, storage, or retrieval of calibration or test data, and that are depended upon to implement requirements of the Metrology Quality Program. (Note: while dated in 1996, this content still provides valuable guidance to the metrology community.)

RP 14: Selecting Standards Lab Environments

The purpose of this document is to provide guidance in the selection of laboratory environments suitable for standards maintenance and calibration operations. It is intended not to mandate a specific environment for a specific calibration, but to direct selection of the environment and to offer some suggestions on how to extend precision in an existing or achievable (practical) environment. Although this document pertains specifically to standards laboratories, it can be applied to any laboratory requiring environmental control.

RP 15: Interlaboratory Comparisons

This document provides guidance for laboratories conducting interlaboratory comparisons (ILCs). Since it is intended to assist those planning and executing an ILC, it contains no mandatory provisions. The information presented may be used to conduct ILCs in many disciplines. It may also serve as a basic guide for proficiency testing.  Numerous valuable references are provided.

RP 16: Verification of Laboratory Environments

This Recommended Practice provides guidance on the acceptance testing of a new laboratory facility and the regular calibration of the laboratory facility to ensure that it meets the design and operational conditions established for the measurements.  Guidance is provided for testing Temperature, Relative Humidity, Static Air Pressure, Particulates, Sound Intensity Levels, Lighting Levels, Electrostatic Dissipative (ESD) Flooring, Measuring the Shielding Effectiveness of Shielded Enclosures, and Site Vibration.

RP 17: Documenting Metrology Education, Training, and On-the-Job Training

This recommended practice provides a method by which metrology education, training, and on-the-job training (OJT) can be documented in the metrology laboratory. The methods are designed to ensure that various aspects of training can be used to ensure compliance to the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025 and national and international standards, and to facilitate universal acceptance of metrology education, training, and on-the-job training (OJT) records by future employers.

RP 21: NCSLI Recommended Practice for the Assessment of ANSI/NCSL Z540.3-2006

RP-21 has been prepared to facilitate uniform assessment of calibration-servicing components (CSC), such as standards and calibration laboratories, calibration servicing centers, etc., seeking to be found in compliance with the requirements of sub-clause 5.3 of the Standard by an authoritative body. This assessment augments accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025:2005 as provided for in sub-clause 5.3 of the Standard.
