RP-21: The Assessment of Z540.3 Sub-clause 5.3 (2012)
The National Standard, ANSI/NCSL Z540.3-2006, Requirements for the Calibration of Measuring and Test Equipment, prescribes the requirements for a calibration system to control the accuracy of the measuring and test equipment used to ensure that products and services comply with prescribed requirements. Included are the requirements for calibration of the measuring and test equipment by a calibration-servicing component of that system. This component is commonly referred to as a standards or calibration laboratory, calibration service center, etc. ANSI/NCSL Z540.3-2006 is commonly referred to in Recommended Practice-21 (RP-21) as the Standard or simply Z540.3.
It is noted in sub-clause 5.3 of the Standard that "Calibration-servicing components [of the calibration system] may be considered competent to provide calibration services when they have been accredited to meet ANS/ISO/IEC 17025:2005, including the requirements of this sub-clause, [5.3], or otherwise found to be in conformance by an authority acceptable to the customer." ANS/ISO/IEC 17025:2005 is commonly referred to in RP-21 as 17025.
Accordingly, RP-21 has been prepared to facilitate uniform assessment of calibration-servicing components (CSC), such as standards and calibration laboratories, calibration servicing centers, etc., seeking to be found in compliance with the requirements of sub-clause 5.3 of the Standard by an authoritative body. This assessment augments accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025:2005 as provided for in sub-clause 5.3 of the Standard
