Thermal Analysis of Medical Materials, Webinar
Medical materials and compounds can be characterized using various thermal analysis techniques. Thermal Analysis is an excellent method of testing many different chemical and physical properties such as the glass transition temperature, moisture content, composition, long-term stability and a material’s behavior during decomposition. Such analyses give the producers confidence that their products are made to the right standard and are uncontaminated.

Continuing developments in medical science have revolutionized human healthcare. The goal of human healthcare is not only the treatment of disease and injury but also the diagnosis and prevention of potentially harmful conditions. Medical products can only serve their purpose if adequate quality control measures are implemented. More ⇒

7th Autumn School METTI (Thermal Measurements and Inverse Techniques), Porquerolles Island (Hyères, South of France)
Finding causes from measured 'Consequences' using a mathematical model linking the two is an inverse problem. This is met in different areas of physical sciences, especially in Heat Transfer. Techniques for solving inverse problems as well as their applications may seem quite obscure for newcomers to the field. Experimentalists desiring to go beyond traditional data processing techniques for estimating the parameters of a model with the maximum accuracy feel often ill prepared in front of inverse techniques. In order to avoid biases at different levels of this kind of involved task, it seems compulsory that specialists of measurement inversion techniques, modelling techniques and experimental techniques share a wide common culture and language. These exchanges are necessary to take into account the difficulties associated to all these fields. It is in this state of mind that this school is proposed. The METTI Group (Thermal Measurements and Inverse Techniques), which is a division of the French Heat Transfer Society (SFT), has already run or co-organized six similar schools, in the Alps (Aussois, 1995 and 2005), in the Pyrenees (Bolquere-Odeillo, 1999), in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, 2009), in Bretagne (Roscoff, 2011) and in Pays Basque (Biarritz, 2015b). For this seventh edition the school is again open to participants from the European Community with the support of the Eurotherm Committee.

Uncertainty Analysis - Training Course, Aarhus, Denmark
Get the practical and theoretical aspects of ensuring traceability in measurements with emphasis on methods for use and calibration of equipment. Measurements are the basis of all commercial decisions and the uncertainty is an assessment of the risk of making wrong decisions. They influence our decisions in quality control, the operation of industrial plant and product sale and purchase and can in this way be directly profit related. Traceability of measurements ensures integrity of the results and that the results will be understood by other people. Calibration is the process that ensures that instruments are accurate and reliable and a part of the process of ensuring that the measurements are traceable. The course covers the practical and theoretical aspects of ensuring traceability in measurements with emphasis on methods for use and calibration of equipment. It will provide you with a set of skills and tools that you can immediately use at your workplace and give you a clear step-by-step approach to uncertainty estimation with practical examples. The course also outlines statistical decision-making. The fundamental concepts are taught by exploring a variety of real world applications and the necessary statistical concepts. There will be a number of theoretical exercises during the course.

After the course you will have obtained:
  • An understanding of the concepts involved in the calculation of measurement uncertainty
  • Skills necessary to calculate measurement uncertainty in a practical and pragmatic manner
  • Knowledge necessary to apply ISO’s Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement successfully at the workplace.

Thermal Analysis for Safety Evaluation of Chemical Processes in the Chemical Industry, Webinar
This webinar describes the various uses of thermal analysis for safety assessment in the chemical industry. In recent years, a number of serious accidents have occurred in chemical production facilities. Many of these accidents have resulted in severe injuries, or even to the death of plant operators, and have often had a dramatic impact on the local environment. In many cases, thermal runaway reactions were the primary cause of the accidents. An efficient thermal screening system for chemicals and chemical processes is therefore crucial for reducing accidents in the chemical industry. More ⇒

Crucibles for Thermal Analysis, Webinar
Crucibles for thermal analysis serve as sample holders during thermoanalytical measurements. The right crucible choice is essential for obtaining accurate results and protects the measuring cell against contamination. In addition, sample loading and removal can be performed fully automatically using the sample robot.

High quality crucibles are essential when it comes to the accuracy and repeatability of results; flat bases ensure perfect thermal contact with the sample, minimize the appearance of artifacts and permit optimum heat transfer • even at extremely low temperature gradients. More ⇒

Fatigue 2020, Catania, Italy
The Fatigue 2020 conference will bring the international fatigue and durability community together to share knowledge and understand the challenges in using sophisticated engineering simulation and modelling tools to complement sound test programmes and develop reliable and cost effective products for modern usage.

As engineering modelling and simulation tools become ever more powerful and sophisticated there still remains the challenge of correlating the virtual world with both idealised laboratory testing and the wide, and potentially unexpected, range of service conditions experienced by machines and structures. These challenges are compounded by the advent of new materials, new ways of manufacturing components, new applications and new test and measurement techniques.

We will seek to explore not only the latest developments in engineering modelling and simulation, advances in test and measurement techniques, innovations in manufacturing, and developments in materials science, but also the complex interrelations between all these topics that give rise to improvements in fatigue performance, durability and structural integrity.
